Designer Weiran explores the relationship between organic and mechanical through fashion
Weiran, an MFA candidate in the Fashion Design and Society program at the Persons School of Design, has presented his latest collection, “Speculative Ecosystem,” inspired by the symbiotic relationship between organic and mechanical through fashion.
The “speculative ecosystem” is a collection that visualizes balance and imbalance in the structure of the eco-sphere. The collection ranges from glasses made of seashell and metal, which he created by mixing synthetic materials with natural products.
“We live in a mechanical environment today, and many people are concerned about the conflict between humans and nature. However, very few people realize that mechanics is finding its balanced way to survive with organisms,” Weiran said. He said it was his observation of plants that led to his thesis.
Weiran was inspired by the roots of indoor trees that took the shape of pots. He sees it as an example of coexistence. He used 3-D modeling to illustrate patterns of coexistence between pots and plants. This led to the inspiration for the “Speculative Ecosystem” collection.
This is not the first time Weiran has used 3-D modeling for a fashion design project. Her latest collection, “Negative Space” uses textile testing and 3-D technology to demonstrate the often neglected void between clothing and the human body. He believes that each part of the garment creates a unique shape for the wearer.
“It was a fun process when I started researching and experimenting with ‘negative space,'” Weiran said. He has browsed his own closet and found that most people subconsciously buy the same type of clothing. Although the negative space between the human body and clothing disappears, it has certain patterns that vary with different clothing styles, activities, and postures.
