8 Things You Can’t Live Without Tony Gorga

Car key

Audi A4 car key

Although I grew up outside of Detroit, I was never a ‘car man’. In recent years, however, I have achieved a bit more in form, function and design. I got a great deal on the very low-mileage Audi A4 in 2020 and had to go for it. Although it is not a ‘family car’, it has been a wonderful ride. It’s functional, comfortable, and the turbo gives it a lot of softness to take on the back road. Although it doesn’t snow much where I live, I would recommend the Audi Quattro system.

The only other thing you’ll notice about my key ring is the house key. No secret grocery club membership, no jelly-of-the-month club tags – nothing. I want as little bulk as possible in my pocket.

Shell Cordovan Card Case Wallet

My dad carries one Huge Moneybag – So big that once the velcro ran out, a rubber band was needed to hold it together. Costanza too. At that point I decided to carry a card case and keep only the essentials there. And, because I’ve seen a lot of people have to have them replaced every two years or so, I know I want to do something.

So, I decided on a Shell Cordovan card case. I found it everywhere on Etsy. It is made from the classic color # 8 of Harwin and the blue contrast stitching looks especially handsome. I’ve had it for almost a year, and it’s been wonderful. It started to take a bit of a patina, and kept what I put there safe. Which, of course, is not too much: two credit cards, my driver’s license and an insurance card.

Wedding band

Wedding bands are one of those deeply personal things that have a story behind them. Here, I want to remind you that there is a lesson to be learned.

When I first got married, I had a 6mm tungsten band. I chose this because a lot of other people had them – and they were accessible for what we could reasonably afford at the time. But, I was measured for it at 11 a.m. in mid-August, after a fairly adequate breakfast. In short, I didn’t measure up properly and it became very difficult to continue. Since tungsten bands cannot be resized, I have to buy a new one after three years

My band is slightly domed with a rounded edge. That way, it slips over my nose but still sits securely on my finger. My size was also 6.75 – not 6.5 or 7. It was as small as I could go though still able to comfortably turn it on and off. It is 5 mm wide – not 4, not 6, but 6 Five. As I mentioned earlier I am a little obsessed and this width was not only chosen to be unique, but it is the right proportions for my eyes, my fingers. It’s 14k instead of 18k, as well, because I wanted it a little harder.

The lesson, though, is to choose something unique for you, not because of current trends.

The clock

Hamilton jazzmaster watch

While I can admire the timepiece and the intricate design of this striking mechanical object, I am probably the least “watch man” among the contributors to this site. I have a decent collection, But my favorite is Hamilton’s Vumatic Jazzmaster Automatic (ref.H32515555). The 40mm case size is great for my wrist, and it works with anything from dial and strap t-shirts to double-breasted suits.

I had my eye on buying it when I found out I was going to be a dad, but an amazing work bonus enabled me to do it a little faster than that. I’ve had it for over four years now, and I don’t think it will go out of collection anytime soon.

I’m not one to line up for the ‘latest and greatest’ of all the tech gadgets that come out next. But, I’m currently carrying an iPhone 12 Pro, and I’m glad. The 12MP camera system is nice, sure, but what I really appreciate about many previous models is the return to more square-off edges. In my eyes, it creates a cleaner design. I also go from the pill to a minimalist case.

I am far away from Bono, but my eyes are fairly sensitive and I wear sunglasses outside most of the time. Because I use so much of them, a quality pairing was perfect for investment And for me, there is no better pairing than the Parsol 714.

I went for the smaller 52mm model, and it worked best for my noggin size. The “Havana” tortoise shell and the brown (polarized) lens I wear are mostly complementary.

Although the 714 is a folding model, I don’t actually fold them often unless I need to pack them in a carry-on bag.

Golf practice fab

Golf course key fob

Like many, in 2020 golf has become a huge part of my life. The course is a place of escape and the game is a way to constantly challenge yourself physically and mentally. I’m lucky to have a club with great practice facilities on the street literally from my home, so I can go out for lunch breaks a few times a week or after my daughter falls asleep to hit some balls, and try to reach a single-number hurdle.

Unwrapping the wrapper

My EDC will, of course, vary depending on where I am going that day. But, I was conscious and intentional about what I carry and why. It’s a less variable that I have to consider and makes me a lot more efficient.
